Valves Brisbane
Most people are aware that plumbing installations comprise of many components including pipes, fittings and valves of various descriptions. Here we have listed some information to help you understand the purpose of some basic valves which are found in most homes and which have an important purpose. If you have any questions feel free to contact us and ask one of our friendly staff for more information.
Cold Water Expansion Valve-
This valve will typically be found on the cold water supply piping leading to the hot water system. The main purpose of this valve is to automatically open at a predetermined pressure and allow cold water to be released from the system thus reducing the pressure and consequently relieving the tank from excessive pressures which can potentially cause the tank to split.
It is essential that this valve is operating correctly at all times. All hot water system manufacturers stipulate that these valves should be replaced at intervals not exceeding 5 years.
Do not be confused if you see water dripping intermittently from this valve as this is its intended purpose however the valve should not drip continuously and if it does then contact us ASAP as you are not only wasting water but probably energy too!
Hot Water Temperature and Expansion Valve –
This valve is found on hot water tanks and is compulsory for non vented hot water systems. The primary function of this valve is to open automatically at a set pressure or temperature whenever necessary to prevent excessive pressures building up inside the hot water tank to alleviate the risk of the tank bursting.
It is possible for the pressure to build up to the extent that the hot water tank can explode. Though this is a very real possibility, although rare. None the less it is very important that this valve is inspected and tested regularly and replaced at intervals no less than every five years in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
It is normal for this valve to drip water whenever the tank is heating but it should stop after a while, if the valve drips continuously then you should contact us straight away to inspect for any faults.
We recommend that you lift the lever on this valve at least once every 3 months, roughly around the time that you receive your power bill as this way you always remember to carry out this important hot water system check. Have a look at the information badge / sticker on the side of your water heater to find the tank year of manufacture and if it is older than five years then your valve is due for replacement if it has not been changed over before.
Contact us for more information or to arrange for one of our qualified technicians to inspect you water heater, it could save you water + energy = money!
